The test. The twelve months of Tom Brown, Anthropic’s chief compute officer, who said on 2 September 2026 that “a once-in-a-generation scientist for key scientific fields” could come within twelve months. The claim weakens if Anthropic shows on the public record a system choosing its own question and test of success in a scientific field, with the result reproduced by an unaffiliated laboratory. An account by Anthropic, published by that day, of its most capable research system that shows a person still choosing the question or the test of success confirms it.
